Mental health challenges don’t discriminate—but access to support often does.

At Cohesive Society CIC, we recognise the deep-rooted barriers that young people from Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic (BAME) backgrounds face when trying to get the help they deserve. These obstacles are often unseen and unspoken, yet they have real consequences.

For many BAME youths, especially girls, mental health is rarely discussed at home. Cultural silence, fear of judgment, or stigma tied to being “weak” keep many young people from speaking out. This silence can leave them feeling isolated, even in their communities. For young men, especially those navigating toxic masculinity norms, expressing vulnerability is often met with shame or dismissal.

Some don’t even realise they’re struggling with a mental health issue—they know something feels off. Others don’t know where to turn or what resources exist. The system isn’t built with their experiences in mind. Language barriers, a lack of cultural understanding from professionals, and systemic racism all contribute to a cycle of neglect.

Let’s be clear: having access to mental health support is not a privilege—it’s a right.

Yet too often, BAME youth are left with no real options. Many turn to friends or family, but that can only go far. Suppose they do try to access professional help. In that case, they may face long wait times, unaffordable private services, or professionals who don’t understand their cultural context, or worse, dismiss their lived experiences of racism and discrimination.

This disconnect between what’s needed and offered creates mistrust and discourages future attempts to seek help. For some, especially those already facing poverty or family instability, the consequences can be devastating.

Here’s how Cohesive Society CIC is stepping in:

  1. Culturally Competent Support
We connect young people with professionals who understand their background, identity, and experiences—not just on paper, but in practice.

  2. Community Outreach & Education
We hold workshops and events to break the stigma around mental health in BAME communities, especially for youth and their families.

  3. Youth-Led Spaces
We create safe, inclusive environments where young people can speak freely, be heard, and support one another.

  4. Mentorship & Peer Programs
We pair youth with mentors who’ve walked similar paths, offering real-world guidance and emotional support.

  5. Language Access & Navigation
We help families navigate mental health systems, offering translated materials and bilingual support staff.

Our Recommendations Moving Forward:

At Cohesive Society CIC, we believe no young person should be left behind because of who they are or where they come from.

The barriers are real, but so is our youth’s strength. With the right support, understanding, and community, they can thrive.
