Why Bengali Matters: A Language of Roots, Family and Future
For children and young people of Bangladeshi heritage living in Britain and across the diaspora, learning Bengali is not simply about acquiring another language. It is about holding on to a living connection with family, ancestry, culture, confidence and opportunity.
Many diaspora children grow up speaking English fluently, succeeding at school and embracing life in Britain. This is something to celebrate. Yet, without Bengali, many can feel disconnected when visiting Bangladesh, speaking with grandparents, meeting relatives or trying to understand the stories that shaped their family. Bengali opens a door to those relationships.
A child who speaks Bengali can communicate directly with grandparents and other older relatives without relying on parents to translate. They can greet family members properly, take part in conversations, understand family humour, express love and respect, and listen to memories of villages, migration, sacrifice, and achievement. Language makes these connections personal. It turns family history from something heard second-hand into something that can be felt and understood.
Bengali is also an important practical skill. Many Bangladeshi-origin families have relatives, homes, land, businesses, savings or inheritance matters in Bangladesh. As children become adults, they may need to speak with local people, understand family discussions, read signs, follow correspondence or communicate with lawyers, officials and community members. Professional advice should always be used for legal matters, but being able to understand Bengali gives a young person confidence, awareness and greater independence.
When diaspora families travel to Bangladesh, language can transform the whole experience. A young person who knows Bengali can speak to a driver, shopkeeper, neighbour, cousin or hotel worker. They can order food, ask directions, visit markets, understand local customs and take part in day-to-day life. Rather than remaining a visitor who feels outside the culture, they can begin to feel connected to the country of their parents and grandparents.
This matters even more because Bangladesh is changing rapidly. It is increasingly becoming a destination for holidays, family visits, investment, tourism, trade and enterprise. The country has growing possibilities in infrastructure, textiles, household goods, digital services, technology, entrepreneurship and artificial intelligence. For future generations of the Bangladeshi diaspora, the ability to communicate in Bengali may become a significant advantage.
There will be young people who wish to develop business links, source products, support charities, invest in property, work with technology companies, build social enterprises or create partnerships between Britain and Bangladesh. Bengali language ability can help them build trust, understand the culture and communicate beyond formal English-speaking circles. It is an asset that may become increasingly valuable in the years ahead.
At Cohesive Society CIC, we are promoting Bengali language learning because we understand that language is a form of inheritance. It is something that parents can pass to children, and children can one day pass to their own sons and daughters. When a language is lost, an important part of identity can become distant. When it is protected, it strengthens confidence, a sense of belonging, and pride.
Our Bengali sessions are designed to be practical, welcoming and enjoyable. Learners will develop skills in speaking, listening, pronunciation, vocabulary, etiquette, reading and writing. They will also learn about Bangladeshi history, culture and the different ways Bengali is spoken across the country.
The classes recognise the richness of the Bangladeshi language. Alongside standard Bangla, learners will be introduced to everyday expressions and regional styles, including an awareness of Sylheti and other familiar colloquial accents. This helps children understand the Bengali they may hear at home, during family gatherings or when travelling to Bangladesh.
The sessions are led by Imran Chowdhury BEM, who brings extensive experience in Bengali writing, reading, translation, teaching, public speaking and community education. With knowledge of seven to eight Bangladeshi dialects and colloquial accents, he can guide learners through both formal Bengali and the everyday language used by families and communities.
We offer one weekly 90-minute class for only £10 per session. Over approximately 25 sessions, learners can build a strong oral foundation, improve their reading ability and gain the confidence to use Bengali in everyday situations. Progress will depend on regular attendance, practice at home and the learner’s own commitment, but the course is designed to give every participant a meaningful and practical start.
Learning Bengali is not about looking backwards. It is about giving young people the tools to understand where they come from, communicate with those they love and prepare for future possibilities.

কেন বাংলা শেখা জরুরি: শিকড়, পরিবার ও ভবিষ্যতের ভাষা
যুক্তরাজ্য ও বিশ্বের বিভিন্ন দেশে বসবাসকারী বাংলাদেশি বংশোদ্ভূত শিশু-কিশোরদের জন্য বাংলা শেখা শুধু আরেকটি ভাষা শেখা নয়। এটি পরিবার, পূর্বপুরুষ, সংস্কৃতি, আত্মবিশ্বাস এবং ভবিষ্যতের সুযোগের সঙ্গে জীবন্ত সম্পর্ক তৈরি করার একটি মাধ্যম।
প্রবাসে বেড়ে ওঠা অনেক শিশু ইংরেজিতে দক্ষ, স্কুলে ভালো করে এবং ব্রিটিশ জীবনের সঙ্গে সুন্দরভাবে মানিয়ে নেয়। এটি অবশ্যই গর্বের বিষয়। কিন্তু বাংলা না জানলে বাংলাদেশে গেলে, দাদা-দাদি বা নানা-নানির সঙ্গে কথা বলার সময়, আত্মীয়স্বজনের সঙ্গে দেখা হলে অথবা পরিবারের ইতিহাস বোঝার ক্ষেত্রে অনেকেই একধরনের দূরত্ব অনুভব করে। বাংলা ভাষা সেই দূরত্ব কমিয়ে দেয়।
যে শিশু বাংলা বলতে পারে, সে সরাসরি তার দাদা-দাদি, নানা-নানি ও বয়োজ্যেষ্ঠ আত্মীয়দের সঙ্গে কথা বলতে পারে। প্রতিটি কথার জন্য মা-বাবার অনুবাদের উপর নির্ভর করতে হয় না। সে সুন্দরভাবে সালাম দিতে পারে, পারিবারিক আলোচনায় অংশ নিতে পারে, হাসি-ঠাট্টা বুঝতে পারে, নিজের অনুভূতি প্রকাশ করতে পারে এবং পরিবারের স্মৃতি শুনতে পারে। গ্রামের গল্প, দেশত্যাগের ইতিহাস, সংগ্রাম, সাফল্য ও পারিবারিক ঐতিহ্য তখন তার কাছে আরও বাস্তব হয়ে ওঠে।
বাংলা শেখার বাস্তব প্রয়োজনও রয়েছে। বহু বাংলাদেশি পরিবারের দেশে আত্মীয়স্বজন, বাড়ি, জমিজমা, ব্যবসা, সঞ্চয় বা উত্তরাধিকারসংক্রান্ত বিষয় থাকতে পারে। বড় হওয়ার সঙ্গে সঙ্গে তরুণ প্রজন্মকে স্থানীয় মানুষ, আত্মীয়স্বজন, কর্মকর্তা বা আইনজীবীদের সঙ্গে যোগাযোগ করতে হতে পারে। আইনি বিষয়ে অবশ্যই পেশাদার পরামর্শ জরুরি, কিন্তু বাংলা বোঝার ক্ষমতা একজন মানুষকে বেশি সচেতন, আত্মবিশ্বাসী এবং স্বাধীন করে তোলে।
বাংলাদেশে ভ্রমণের সময় ভাষাজ্ঞান পুরো অভিজ্ঞতাকে বদলে দিতে পারে। বাংলা জানা থাকলে একজন তরুণ চালক, দোকানদার, প্রতিবেশী, কাজিন বা হোটেলের কর্মীদের সঙ্গে সহজে কথা বলতে পারে। খাবার অর্ডার করা, রাস্তা জিজ্ঞাসা করা, বাজার করা, স্থানীয় রীতি বোঝা এবং দৈনন্দিন কাজ করা অনেক সহজ হয়ে যায়। তখন সে কেবল একজন পর্যটক থাকে না; সে নিজের পূর্বপুরুষের দেশের সঙ্গে গভীর সম্পর্ক অনুভব করতে শুরু করে।
বাংলাদেশ এখন দ্রুত পরিবর্তিত হচ্ছে। দেশটি ক্রমে ছুটি কাটানো, পারিবারিক ভ্রমণ, ব্যবসা, বিনিয়োগ, পর্যটন এবং নতুন উদ্যোগের একটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ গন্তব্যে পরিণত হচ্ছে। অবকাঠামো, গার্মেন্টস ও টেক্সটাইল, গৃহস্থালি পণ্য, প্রযুক্তি, ডিজিটাল সেবা, উদ্যোক্তা উন্নয়ন এবং কৃত্রিম বুদ্ধিমত্তা বা এআই-এর ক্ষেত্রে বাংলাদেশের সামনে নতুন সম্ভাবনা তৈরি হচ্ছে।
আগামী প্রজন্মের বাংলাদেশি প্রবাসীরা ব্যবসায়িক সংযোগ, পণ্য সংগ্রহ, সামাজিক উদ্যোগ, দাতব্য কাজ, সম্পত্তি বিনিয়োগ, প্রযুক্তি সহযোগিতা বা ব্রিটেন-বাংলাদেশ অংশীদারিত্ব গড়ে তুলতে চাইতে পারে। বাংলা জানলে তারা মানুষের আস্থা অর্জন করতে পারবে, সমাজকে ভালোভাবে বুঝতে পারবে এবং শুধু ইংরেজিভাষী পরিসরে সীমাবদ্ধ থাকবে না।
Cohesive Society CIC বাংলা ভাষা শিক্ষা প্রচার করছে কারণ আমরা বিশ্বাস করি, ভাষা একটি উত্তরাধিকার। মা-বাবা এটি সন্তানদের দিতে পারেন, আর সেই সন্তানরা একদিন তাদের নিজের সন্তানদের কাছে পৌঁছে দিতে পারে। ভাষা হারিয়ে গেলে পরিচয়ের একটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ অংশ দূরে সরে যায়। কিন্তু ভাষা রক্ষা করলে আত্মবিশ্বাস, ঐক্যবোধ এবং গর্ব আরও শক্তিশালী হয়।
আমাদের বাংলা ক্লাসগুলো হবে সহজ, বাস্তবমুখী, আনন্দদায়ক এবং আত্মবিশ্বাস গড়ে তোলার উপযোগী। শিক্ষার্থীরা কথা বলা, শোনা, উচ্চারণ, শব্দভাণ্ডার, ভদ্রতা, পড়া ও লেখা শিখবে। পাশাপাশি বাংলাদেশের ইতিহাস, সংস্কৃতি এবং বিভিন্ন অঞ্চলের কথ্য ভাষার সঙ্গে পরিচিত হবে।
স্ট্যান্ডার্ড বা শুদ্ধ বাংলার পাশাপাশি শিক্ষার্থীরা দৈনন্দিন কথ্য বাংলা, সিলেটি উচ্চারণ এবং বাংলাদেশের অন্যান্য আঞ্চলিক ভাষার ধারণাও পাবে। এতে তারা বাড়িতে, আত্মীয়দের কাছে বা বাংলাদেশে গিয়ে যে বাংলা শুনবে, তা সহজে বুঝতে পারবে।
এই ক্লাস পরিচালনা করবেন ইমরান চৌধুরী BEM, যার বাংলা পড়া, লেখা, অনুবাদ, শিক্ষা, জনসম্মুখে বক্তৃতা এবং কমিউনিটি শিক্ষার ক্ষেত্রে দীর্ঘ অভিজ্ঞতা রয়েছে। তিনি বাংলাদেশের সাত থেকে আটটি আঞ্চলিক উপভাষা ও কথ্য উচ্চারণ সম্পর্কে জানেন, যা শিক্ষার্থীদের বইয়ের বাংলা ও বাস্তব জীবনের বাংলা—দুই ক্ষেত্রেই সহায়তা করবে।
প্রতি সপ্তাহে একদিন ৯০ মিনিটের ক্লাস, প্রতি সেশন মাত্র £10। প্রায় ২৫টি সেশনের মাধ্যমে একজন শিক্ষার্থী বাংলা বপ্রায় ভিত্তি, পড়ার দক্ষতা এবং দৈনন্দিন জীবনে বাংলা বলার আত্মবিশ্বাস অর্জন করতে পারে। নিয়মিত উপস্থিতি, বাড়িতে অনুশীলন এবং শেখার আগ্রহ থাকলে নিয়মিতও ভালো হবে।
